On Age

In my 30s, time felt infinite. Like I had a lot of time to get things right. When I turned 40 it swung hard the other direction. I began to worry about my health, my longevity. Leaving behind a bad deal for my wife. A new type of urgency presented itself often in the middle of the night.

While I continue to explore how to leverage emotions of memento mori for good in pursuit of new levels of discipline, I've been encouraged to stumble upon these very helpful anecdotes on middle age from some gifted thinkers of our time.

I remember turning 40 thinking I'm old; it's over. I spent my 40s feeling old. What's funny is when I turned 50, it stopped. I felt very young for my age. So I would go back (to my 40 year old self) and say "Your 50s are going to be incredible. Spend your 40s just like your 30s and 20s preparing; keep getting better and keep being excited about all of the things that are going to happen to you." I'm 53 and I haven't peaked yet... you can easily peak in your 60s.
